| Description of Research: |
We work to:
1. inpatient clinical research studies of insulin usage.
2. VA database and implementation studies on early identification of diabetes.
3. collaborate with researchers in ophthalmology, radiology, and medicine to study methods of early identificaiton of diabetic retinopathy with electroretinography (ERG) and other measures.
4. VA, NIH, and pharmaceutical company clinical trials through the Clinical Studies Center
We previously performed Basic Science studies:
1. treat type 1 diabetes with hepatic insulin gene therapy in animal models together with Dr. Peter Thule'
2. evaluate in vivo carbohydrate metabolism using NMR spectroscopy techniques in models of hepatic insulin gene therapy, diabetic ketoacidosis, and fructose-induced fatty liver in rats. |
| Relevance to VA: |
I do clinical research related to diabetes. Diabetes affects a disproportionate number of Veterans and is growing in prevalence. I previously did basic science projects at the Atlanta VA related to hepatic insulin gene therapy for diabetes and hematic carbohydrate metabolism.
