Investigator: Jonathan Pollock
Phone: (404) 321-6111 ext. 4940
Email: jonathan.pollock2@va.gov
Primary Research Interest: Surgery (General)
Description of Research: This project is a retrospective review of all patients presenting to the Atlanta VA Medical Center with an ICD9/10 diagnosis of acute cholecystitis. It will look at the presenting factors including demographics, duration of symptoms, and comorbidities and outcomes including time to operation, cholecystostomy tube placement, hospital length of stay, postoperative complications, and intraoperative complications.
Relevance to VA: Acute cholecystitis is a difficult clinical problem, made more difficult by delays in operative management. Delays can be patient driven or institutionally driven and can lead to poor outcomes and more difficult operations that put the patient at risk for potentially devastating complications. Some institutional delays are unique to the VA system and will be identified in order to develop best practices for management of acute cholecystitis in this setting. The data will also be prepared for publication to disseminate those best practices.
