Investigator: Aliza Wingo
Phone: (404) 321-6111 ext. 204248
Primary Research Interest: Psychiatry
Description of Research: The genetics of resilience, psychological well-being, depression, PTSD, and molecular mechanisms underlying their effects on dementia risk
Relevance to VA: Given the scientific community’s propensity to study disease etiology rather than protective factors, studies on resilience, especially its genetic and neurobiological mechanisms, are particularly lacking. The genetic basis of resilience, the focus of this research proposal, is highly relevant to our soldiers and veterans. Results from this study can incrementally add to the endeavor of enhancing protective factors and finding treatment or prevention strategies for the common psychiatric disorders in individuals exposed to severe stress or trauma.
