Conducting Research at the Atlanta VA
Like all institutions, the Atlanta VA Medical Center has policies and procedures regulating the conduct of research at its facility. AREF helps researchers navigate these sometimes confusing rules governing studies at federal institutions.

The Science Information Office (SIO) and the Human Studies Analyst act as resources for investigators, study coordinators, and laboratory personnel during the design and implementation of your projects. We encourage you to utilize these members of our team should you have any questions or need guidance.

Research Submissions

Submission Guidelines | VA Radioisotope Use

The medical center Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) is responsible for review and approval of all proposed clinical and research uses of radiation and radioactive material.

In order to avoid conflict with the NRC requirements and our license conditions, all human and non-human research protocols involving radioactive materials should be routed to the Radiation Safety Office (11RSO) for review. After review, the Radiation Safety Office will provide a letter acknowledging their approval of the research project or describing additional steps necessary prior to receipt of approval.
